Planet Earth. The Future. It’s been 415 years since the end of the global war. For the last hundreds of years people followed the same old motto: faster, higher, further.
In addition to science and technological development, we have also conquered space. We don’t need the patronage of the Sun anymore, now we are the stars ourselves. It was well known that people are alone in this universe, however, we are not. Other planets are out there. We have got the best of their nature, everything that was dead comes back to life.
The same works for pleasure. They are replaced with the Ocular system. It works just like rose-tinted glasses and activates the reward system that artificially stimulates the production of dopamine. It helps a lot especially on the planets that have no life beauties. Artificial enjoyment. Since the day a human is born, he doesn’t have to ask questions about the purpose of his life because the Machine has already selected it. Obviously not everyone is subject to this selection simply because the system is relatively new. The old generation has to attain the age.

I’m one of the old generation and I’m investigating a series of murders. People are found completely naked, some parts of their bodies are missing other parts have embedded chips of unknown origin. These are not trivial deaths. A typical causes of death usually are epilepsy, a heart rupture and cardiorespiratory arrest associated with the effects of Ocular or psychosis followed by a sacrifice.
It makes it all even more weird because the development of the world, the industry boost and the exploration of the universe made crime much more sophisticated. It sticks to «cold war» scenario, destroys the enemies remotely.
Right now I’m dealing with a primitive scheme. It cannot be stopped by pressing the «Delete» key. I’m the one who has to find the person committing these murders. The murderer is one of us, one of the old generation. The maniac is cunning and dangerous and the most important part is he is not a synthetic illusion, he is a real and tangible horror.
